Chrysler ’sacks’ US dealers – carsales.com.au

Chrysler 'sacks' US dealers

Chrysler has confirmed it will shed a quarter of its US dealer network

Chryslers has overnight confirmed it will shed 789 of its near-3200 US Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge dealers. The ‘announcement’ came as the company filed motions with the US Bankruptcy Court to end selected US dealer franchise agreements.

According to US media industry source, Automotive News, the affected dealers will be required to close their franchised operations by June 9. Many are expected to continue trading via other franchises or as used car operations, Automotive News said.

Chrysler put a positive spin on the dealer group downsizing stating, “Subject to Court approval, 2392 Chrysler, Jeep or Dodge dealers will continue with the new company in a global alliance with Fiat once the sale is complete.”

“We are in the process of revitalizing Chrysler’s business to succeed as a viable enterprise under new ownership in the future,” said Chrysler’s ex-Toyota sales chief, Vice Chairman and President, Jim Press (pictured).

Pontiac dead… Holden export crisis looms – Words Josh Dowling

Pontiac dead… Holden export crisis looms
words – Josh Dowling

It’s official GM will close Pontiac as part of its global restructure…. And with it an important export market for Commodore…

The Holden Commodore’s export to North America is under a cloud following an announcement overnight that General Motors would close the Pontiac brand by the end of 2010.

The recently appointed president and CEO of General Motors, Fritz Henderson, announced via a webcast video conference last night (between 11pm and midnight Australian time Monday, April 27) that the Hummer, Saab and Saturn brands would be sold or closed by the end of this year, and Pontiac would be “phased out by no later than 2010″.

However, the Commodore-based Pontiac G8 sedan is expected to be phased out by the end of this year.

Chrysler / Fiat Deal Closer – Words Stephen Ottley

Chrysler/Fiat deal closer
words – Stephen Ottley

Pieces falling into place for American-Italian alliance

With the US government deadline looming for Chrysler LLC the beleaguered auto maker is looking likely to reach an agreement with Fiat to avoid bankruptcy.

The company managed to strike a last minute deal with the powerful United Auto Workers Union yesterday and is now awaiting approval from its members which should be the last major hurdle it has to overcome.

The deal with the UAW comes after a similar breakthrough with the Canadian unions and an agreement from Daimler to shed its final stake in Chrysler. Reports from the US indicate that should be enough for the proposed alliance between Chrysler and Italian giant Fiat to go ahead by the end of the month.
